Plantronics CS540 Wireless Headset – Lightweight DECT Office Headset

★★★★★4.8/5· thousands of reviews

We designed the Plantronics CS540 for professionals who spend hours on desk phone calls and need a headset that disappears on the ear. At just 21 grams, this convertible wireless headset uses secure DECT 6.0 technology to deliver interference-free audio up to 350 feet from the base station.

The noise-canceling microphone filters out background office chatter so your voice stays clear on every call. One-touch call answer/end, volume, and mute controls sit right on the headset, so you never have to reach for the phone. The adaptive power system automatically adjusts to your environment to extend talk time up to 7 hours on a single charge.

We built the CS540 with three wearing styles — over-the-ear, over-the-head, and behind-the-neck — so you can switch configurations throughout the day as comfort needs change. The magnetic docking station makes charging effortless between calls.

DECT Wireless Technology & Range

DECT Wireless Technology & Range

The CS540 operates on DECT 6.0 wireless at 1.9 GHz, which means zero interference from Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth devices, or other office equipment sharing the 2.4 GHz band. You get crystal-clear audio whether you’re at your desk or walking to the supply room 300 feet away.

We chose DECT because it delivers bank-grade security for your conversations — the encrypted connection between headset and base prevents eavesdropping in open office environments. The base station pairs exclusively with your headset, so neighboring DECT devices won’t cause crosstalk or dropped calls.

Convertible Wearing Styles & All-Day Comfort

Convertible Wearing Styles & All-Day Comfort

At 21 grams, the CS540 weighs less than a standard AAA battery. We engineered three wearing configurations so you can adjust fit throughout the day without swapping headsets.

The over-the-ear hook rotates 180 degrees to fit either ear and distributes weight across the outer ear rather than pressing into the ear canal. For users who prefer traditional headband stability, the included over-the-head strap clicks into place in seconds. Behind-the-neck wearing works well under hard hats or when you need the top of your head completely clear.

Noise-Canceling Microphone & Audio Quality

Noise-Canceling Microphone & Audio Quality

The CS540’s noise-canceling mic uses dual-microphone technology to isolate your voice from background office noise. One mic captures your speech while a second mic samples ambient sound — the DSP processor subtracts the ambient signal in real time so only your voice transmits to the caller.

Wideband audio support (when paired with a compatible phone system) extends frequency response from 150 Hz to 6800 Hz, which captures the full tonal range of human speech. Callers hear the difference immediately — consonants like ‘S’ and ‘F’ come through crisply instead of washing out into static.

Forget you’re wearing it after five minutes
I’m on the phone 6-7 hours a day and this is the first headset that doesn’t give me ear fatigue by lunch. The over-the-ear hook feels secure without clamping. Battery easily lasts my entire shift and I’ve never had a call drop even when I walk to the warehouse.

Crystal clear audio on both ends
Clients comment on how clear I sound compared to my old headset. The noise canceling works great in our open office — coworkers talking nearby don’t bleed into my calls. Range is impressive, I can walk anywhere in our 8000 sq ft space without static.

Switching wearing styles is a game changer
I start the day over-the-ear and switch to over-the-head after lunch when my ear gets warm. Takes two seconds to swap and the fit is solid either way. Love that I don’t need two separate headsets for different comfort preferences.

HL10 lifter works perfectly with our Cisco phones
We paired the CS540 with the HL10 handset lifter on our Cisco 7942 phones and remote answering is flawless. I answer calls from the break room without running back to my desk. Setup took less than five minutes per phone.

Great headset, wish battery lasted a bit longer
Audio quality and comfort are excellent. I get about 6 hours of talk time which is fine for most days, but on heavy call volume days I need to charge mid-afternoon. The magnetic dock makes it easy to drop in for a quick top-up between calls though.

Reliable workhorse for customer service team
We’ve deployed 40 CS540 headsets across our call center and they’ve been rock solid for 18 months. Minimal tech support calls, easy for agents to use, and the DECT connection never interferes with our Wi-Fi network. Would buy again.

CS540 Wireless Headset Questions

The CS540 delivers reliable wireless range up to 350 feet from the base station in typical office environments. Actual range depends on building construction — concrete walls and metal structures reduce range, while open floor plans allow you to roam freely across most small to mid-size offices.

The headset maintains connection strength as you move and automatically boosts transmission power when you approach the edge of range. You’ll hear a warning tone in the headset if you’re about to lose connection, giving you time to walk back toward your desk before the call drops.

The standard CS540 model connects to desk phones only via the included direct-connect cable or optional HL10 handset lifter. For PC connectivity, look at the CS540-XD with USB adapter or consider the Plantronics Savi series, which supports simultaneous connections to desk phone, PC softphone, and mobile devices.

If you primarily use a PC softphone but occasionally need desk phone connectivity, the Voyager Focus UC or Savi 8200 models offer more flexible multi-device switching within a single headset.

Both models use identical DECT wireless technology, range, audio quality, and battery performance. The CS540 includes three convertible wearing styles — over-the-ear, over-the-head, and behind-the-neck — while the CS530 ships with only the over-the-ear configuration.

If you know you prefer over-the-ear wearing and won’t use the alternate styles, the CS530 costs slightly less. Choose the CS540 if you want flexibility to switch wearing styles throughout the day or share the headset among multiple users who prefer different fits.

If your desk phone has a dedicated headset port (usually a port with a headset icon), you can plug the CS540’s direct-connect cable into that port and answer calls remotely using the button on the headset. The phone automatically routes audio to the headset when you press answer.

If your phone lacks a headset port or you want the base to physically answer the call even when you’re away from your desk, add the HL10 handset lifter. It mounts on the handset cradle and mechanically lifts the handset when you press the call-answer button on your headset, giving you true remote answer capability from anywhere within wireless range.

Expect up to 7 hours of continuous talk time on a full charge with adaptive power management enabled. Standby time extends to 50 hours, so you can leave the headset powered on overnight and it’ll be ready for calls the next morning.

Battery life decreases slightly in high-interference environments or when you’re consistently working at the edge of wireless range, since the headset uses more power to maintain the connection. Most users charge overnight and have enough battery to cover a full 8-hour workday with typical call volume.

The CS540 ships with a universal direct-connect cable compatible with most Cisco, Avaya, Polycom, Mitel, and Nortel desk phones that have a headset port. Check your phone’s documentation or look for a port labeled with a headset icon on the back or side of the unit.

For phones without a headset port, the HL10 handset lifter provides mechanical compatibility with virtually any desk phone. Electronic hook switch cables offer cleaner integration for supported models — check the EHS compatibility chart on our support site to find the correct cable for your phone brand and model.

Yes, replacement batteries are available through our parts catalog and authorized resellers. The battery compartment opens with a small sliding latch on the headset — no tools required. Pop out the old battery, insert the new one with contacts aligned, and snap the cover closed.

The lithium-ion battery maintains 80% capacity after approximately 500 full charge cycles, which translates to roughly two years of daily use before you’ll notice reduced talk time. We recommend keeping a spare battery on hand if you rely on the headset for mission-critical communications.
